Daylight Savings Time: Spring Forward

  • Date: 03/13/2022 3:00 AM - 3:59 AM

Daylight Savings Time: Rest Up for Safety! Today, our clocks will jump ahead one hour for Daylight Savings Time (DST) at 2:00am.

The switch to daylight savings time has been shown to significantly increase crash risk, but being aware of what this change means can help keep yourself and other road users safe.

  • Drowsy driving is associated with crashes occurring after the DST change, especially for the first two days after springing forward. Plan your sleep schedule ahead so you can be a safe driver in the morning!
  • The long afternoons are great for getting outside! Drivers should be ready to share the road with more cyclists and pedestrians as the beautiful spring weather brings more outdoor activity!
  • Pedestrian and bicycle commuters who have the benefit of morning sunshine this week may find themselves in the darkness a little while longer after the change – drivers should be cautious about sharing the road with cyclists and pedestrians, and walk-to-school commuters especially. Be especially alert in school zones and anywhere folks may be crossing the road, with or without a marked crosswalk.
  • If you’re out walking or biking in the dark mornings, remember to wear high visibility clothing – stop by City Hall and pick up your free high-vis target zero vest!
