Special events that affect the ordinary use of a property (whether on private or public property), and that use City streets, facilities, or services require a special event permit. For more information on special event code requirements, see Kenmore Municipal Code Chapter 8.40.
Why Do I Need a Special Event Permit?
- Public Safety: The primary purpose of a special event permit is to help ensure the safety and well-being of event attendees, participants, and the public. The permit process allows local authorities to review event plans, including safety measures, emergency preparedness, crowd control, and traffic management.
- Compliance with Regulations: Special events often involve temporary structures, amplified sound, food vendors, alcohol service, lane closures, or other activities that require compliance with local regulations.
- Traffic and Parking Management: Events that may impact traffic flow, parking availability, or public transportation may be required to implement necessary measures to minimize disruptions and ensure smooth traffic operations.
- Protecting the Environment: Outdoor events held in public spaces, parks, or near environmentally sensitive areas require additional review to safeguard environmental protection measures and support responsible environmental stewardship.
- Liability and Insurance: Event organizers are required to provide liability insurance coverage as part of the permit application process. This helps protect both the event organizers and the public in case of any accidents, property damage, or other unforeseen incidents.
- Community Engagement and Planning: Permitting allows for effective coordination, communication, and collaboration among event organizers and local authorities.
When Should I Apply?
We strongly encourage interested parties to apply for the permit well in advance to allow for sufficient processing time (we recommend applying at least 60 days in advance).
