Overview
The City of Kenmore Pavement Management Program is an annual street maintenance program in which city streets are evaluated on their condition. Based upon their condition, roads are either crack sealed, slurry/micro sealed, or ground down and then overlaid with a new paved surface. Sometimes minor patching or pavement repair will be performed before other pavement treatments are applied. With the increasing cost of maintaining our roadways, the City has been looking at more cost-effective ways to extend the life of our roads before doing a costly overlay. Once a crack has formed in the asphalt, it will continue to grow allowing moisture to penetrate the pavement surface and saturating the base. This continues to weaken the pavement allowing more moisture to enter further damaging the surface. If this is not halted in time, the pavement will deteriorate to where an overlay will be necessary. Sealing the roads is a pavement preservation treatment used to protect the pavement while it is still in good condition and extend a roadway’s life by several years before an overlay is required. “Keeping our good roads good” significantly reduces the lifecycle cost of our roads.
