Project Update (8/6/2020):

The Simonds Road Overlay Project is substantially complete. Bike lanes have been added on both sides of the road, connecting to bike lanes that extend to Kirkland from the previous Simonds Road project in 2016.  The current project also included paving and re-striping 1.1 miles of Simonds Road, new sidewalks, curb and gutter work, improvements to intersections, and added crossings.  Follow-up items include installing the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) and completing pavement markings for the bike crossings.

Twenty-one curb ramps were constructed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards as part of this project. Unfortunately, two ramps located at 84th Ave NE and Simonds Road fall short of the standards and parts of these ramps need to be reconstructed.  

• Construction to correct the two ramps is expected to take place during August and will last approximately two-three days. 

• During construction, there will be temporary lane closures at the intersection of 84th Ave NE and Simonds Road.

o Please drive safely, watch for bicyclists, and pay attention to signs and flaggers directing traffic through the intersection. 

o Consider alternate routes during construction, if possible.

2020 Overlay: Simonds Road (NE 163rd Pl - 92nd Ave NE)

Current Status: Substantially Complete (as of 8/6/2020)

Project Area Map:

Construction began June 1, 2020. Most of the work will be done between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays. The work will involve single-lane closures in each direction. Construction is expected to take approximately 4-5 weeks.

An asphalt overlay requires the City to upgrade the ADA ramps to the most current standards prior to paving. Repair of deteriorating sections of pavement will also occur prior to paving. Following the paving, crews will install traffic markings and adjust utility valves and storm drains.

Paving work requires numerous pieces of heavy equipment; the work zone can be quite lengthy and cause significant traffic delays during construction hours. Always watch for equipment, flaggers, and workers along the road when driving through a work zone, and expect reduced speed limits. We appreciate your patience.

In support of Kenmore’s Target Zero efforts to increase safety and facilities for non-motorized traffic, following the asphalt overlay Simonds Rd NE will be restriped to include bike lanes.

The City of Kenmore Asphalt Overlay is an annual street maintenance program in which selected streets are repaved along with repair and improvement to curbs, sidewalks and wheelchair ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Here is what to expect during a typical asphalt overlay project:

Phase 1 - Prep work. Prior to paving, the contractor's crew will repair deteriorating sections of pavement, grade the shoulders to expose the edge of asphalt, trim any low overhanging trees or shrubs that will be in the way for the dump trucks, and perform any other work necessary to prepare the roadway surface for paving.

Phase 2 - Grinding and paving. Before the overlay paving begins, crews will grind the transition joints, side streets and curbs. Paving work requires numerous pieces of heavy equipment to haul, place and roll the asphalt. Due to the nature of paving and the amount of equipment needed, the work zone can be quite lengthy and will cause significant traffic delays during construction hours. There may be significant cuts in the asphalt that make the road difficult to navigate. Motorcyclists and bicyclists in particular should use extreme caution.

Phase 3 - Traffic markings and other work. In the days following the paving, crews will be on site to perform work such as installing traffic markings, placing crushed rock along gravel shoulders and driveways, and adjusting utility valves and storm drains. Traffic markings will be installed as soon as possible after paving, but this phase is weather dependent.
